Career Selection

The process to select a career is not complicated but delicate. It is important to understand why we want to pursue a certain career. The decision should never be financial only. I say only because financial could be the differentiation aspect. If to career choice provide the same level of contentment and align with a person’s deep interest, then choosing the one with a higher pay will be acceptable. Financial used as the only decision factor is a disaster waiting to happen. On the other hand, omitting financial from the process could also lead to a disaster. If a lawyer decides to serve a certain community at a low cost but is not willing to adapt to an appropriate lifestyle, they will not provide excellent service. Therefore, we have to look at the big picture and include all variable in the decision making.

I addressed passion a few times and it is worth noting passion must compliment your values and motivations.  Without values, we are shooting in the dark and not aiming for any particular target. Personality plays a role in helping us decide if what we call passion is just a hobby and not something we absolutely love to do. If a person prefers to work alone, then a career sales, healthcare provider, teaching, etc. might not be the right choice for them.

Where we want to live is also a major factor. If we are limited to a specific location, for example close to our parents, we might be limited to the type of work we can pursue.

Your Dream Job

Your dream job is one you are willing to do even if you are not paid for it but also one where you are most at peace with yourself. For some people, the income level is what makes it a dream job. However, if the focus is monetary, the motivation is not there to perform at the highest level. The salary should be the added advantage for doing something we love.

As I wrote in the article Choosing A Career , this could be a bit tricky. Once a person identifies the passion they want to pursue as a career, choosing a career path that best aligns with their goals is important. Many options could be available that can fulfill the passion but which one is right. If a person is very athletic, can they just go after any sport team? Obviously this will be a career suicide. They have to hone in on the specific skills they want to develop and choose the career accordingly. A basketball players has completely different skills than a water polo player so it is critical to find the career that is tied to our skills. Skills, passion and goals must all align in order to achieve success and also find contentment and fulfillment.

Before we tackle how to find work, we have to start with the focus area of the work. Is it a new job, a better job, just a job, or a dream job that we are looking for. While they all have some common requirements and approaches, they slightly differ in one key area: do we do a very targeted search, just a broad search, or something in between?
